Did you mean bud or flower? Happens all the time to me with the dark or
blue/purple irise flowers. I am now careful to pick off the dying
flowers before they drip, and/or make sure that the vase sits on a table
with a non-porus surface. Hope the marble was not too stained

The best that I have come up with is finding someone knowledgeable
enough to make some suggestions, then ordering the suggestions and
growing them side by side and by *careful* comparison elimination by
trial and miss.
