Good morning.

Yes, this is normal. I've been told that this "color dye" is what they
used in the olden days to make ink.  You sound like me, in the beginning
with too many alike unnamed iris. As I acquired named iris, I dug up the
unnamed ones and gave them to a Retirement Center and a Nursing Home.
Now, we all enjoy them, since I have to pass these two places going to
and from work.  Every year I received cards from them sometimes with
photos of the gardeners & blooms. 

To any of those who have some they don't want anymore, do this. It gets
the people out in the fresh air, and gives them something to do. They
have continued to bless my life and others.
