Today I have in bloom a setosa grown from SIGNA seed. This is the second
year and the plant has two bloom stalks. One stalk, about 18" tall, is
carrying flowers with six falls and six standards. It is a beautiful dark
blue. First look suggested a JI but it really is the setosa from seed.
>From the same sowing last spring I have a pseudacorus blooming on a branched
stalk in a nearly white color with some brown tracings at the throat. This
plant is not as vigorous as the yellow species but is shorter and quite
graceful. At two years from seed it may increase in vigor but is quite nice
as it is. Only one plant bloomed from the sowing and it is blooming middle
June here (which is normal). I have about a dozen additional plants from
this sowing - could they all bloom the same pale color? If I give them to
friends can I guarantee the bloom?
Finally, in looking for photographs in the Phillips-Rix "Perennials" I came
across (page 226 - vol l) a photo of Cambridge Blue. I seem to recall the
question here on the list regarding Cambridge or Cambridge Blue. If it was
the latter you can see a photo and description if the question was not
adequately answered earlier. It is a spuria hybrid.
