Hi,
Having more buds generally means your iris will bloom for a longer
period of time. When the objective is for instance a tall bearded to be in
bloom for 2 weeks, the stem having 7 or more buds gives you a better chance
of the 2 week objective to be attained. I love Rebecca Perret(J Cayeux 1993)
s. white; f white edged blue-lavender ;tangerine beards. which has 5 buds
most of the time, but each large and beautiful flower maintains good shape at
least 5 days so more than makes up for loss of buds.
If your iris has 12 buds and they all bloom at once you have a gladiola
instead.
I have not had a great deal of succes with my attemps to make crosses,
but a method for collecting seeds is to put nylon stockings, (The foot part)
over the pod lightly bind the bottom and let it ripen in place. I don't
forget and pop the stem nor do the seeds get lost , fall on the ground and
get pulled as a weed. The cross names do not get mixed up with others either.
It works well for me but I cannot imagine the appearance of 12 dozen knee
highs in a moderate sized garden - it would just confirm what many people
think of us iris nuts.
The JI's are blooming a long time right now- rain, rain, rain and lower
temps. It is alright for that reason but makes me tired.
Rita B from Western Washington where it is 50 degrees F , about 1/2 in.
rain today- welcome summer yeah!
