Some years ago, when I was co-chairing the ASI Sale, Shahak was doing a lot of
work with inter-species hybrids. He was trying for the species look, plus
gardenability and ease of germination. He distributed quite a few of the first
and second generation crosses through the sale under number -- and I do have
records of many of their pedigrees.

Later, he listed them generically instead of as individual clones. For example,
his "urmiensis hybrids", were not pure I. urmiensis but looked more like it
than any other species. At first, he included the actual seedling number with
each of these hybrids so it was possible to determine its pedigree. I don't
know when he discontinued that practice.

The proverbial bottom line is that these are probably the most susiana-like
thing available today. The "susiana hybrids" I got from him did have
susiana-like veining, and looked far more like the species itself than anything
I've obtained from other, non-specialized sources in the last 20 years. If you
want something as close as possible to an unobtainable species, Shahak's hybrids
are the answer.

: Does David Shahak have the species?

Not the last time I asked him about it.

Disappointed, too.
