Purple based foliage

Hi, all:
I know there was a discussion on this a month or so back, but I don't
remember enough. Today when I was planting some rhizomes a friend gave
me I noticed how very purple-streaked some of the foliage is on these
older, unnamed cultivars (unknown to friend -- I just have her
descriptions of blooms.)
Anyway, what *is* the significance of purple based foliage on iris?
