Sharon,
I have never measured the temperature under the plastic but again let me
refer to the University of California article. "In the San Joaquin
valleys (where I live) soil solarized during June or July often reaches
temperatures of 140 degrees F at 2 inches and 102 degrees F as deep as
18 inches." As a result, many disease-causing organisms are controlled
to 18 inches or deeper. Control has continued for at least two growing
seasons."
