The TBs are finishing up and about half the SIBs are in full bloom now.
Spurias just kicked into full gear even though they'd been moved this
spring and the psuedacorus and laevigata are going like crazy.
The sequence of bloom has been somewhat different here in northern Utah:
the TBs and SIBs and my one pseud are on the way out, while the Spurias are
still in tight bud.
I wrote to the list earlier about the unusually tall stalks on the TBs here
this year (averaging over 40", whereas in a normal year stalks here tend to
be shorter than registration height), but after Iris-l went down the TBs
were reaching new heights here with CONJURATION at 56" and TRIPLE WHAMMY at
59" standing head and shoulders above the others (is it a coincidence that
both of these are Space-Agers?). TW had very large flowers to match its
height, but only 7 buds per stalk. CONJURATION sported smaller flowers, but
had stalks with up to five branches plus terminal and 17 buds. The only
thing it didn't have was appendages - only two or three blossoms out of
more than 60 have shown more than the barest hint of horns.
Speaking of horns, there was considerable discussion earlier about whether
the cover picture on the October, 1997 AIS Bulletin or the picture in the
center section of the October, 1996 AIS Bulletin best represented the
appearance of THORNBIRD. As it bloomed here this year (for the first time)
the '97 picture better represented the form and color (though it was more
greenish here), but all blossoms sported purple horns, just as depicted in
the '96 photo. This is a cultivar that just doesn't want to be typecast!
Nice to hear that the Aussies are getting a bit of overlap with our bloom
season. Hope to have some rebloom while their spring bloom is on this fall!
