OT:garden visits

From: Gordon & Loraine Nicholson <iris4u@pacbell.net>

Wow did we spend an enjoyable day Saturday. Got up early armed with
catalogs from three gardens about 2-3 hours away from here at much
higher elevations then us. Started at Mary Hess's Bluebird Haven (after
2 yard sales, picked up old hand saw for $14), sorry to say Mary was not
there, Erin her eldest child was graduating from hi-school. Mary and
Eric's (Erick will be a junior and is wonderful to talk to about iris)
garden was just past peak bloom but still had lots to see including
allot of older varieties, all set in rolling hills with lots of shade
trees, birds singing, lizards running etc: We decieded to take unknown
roads over to Stones Garden in the town of Volcano, seen some very
interesting things but no cars or people (very unusal for California),
Bill and June are wonderful hosts, not only was their garden in full
bloom but we were served some of Junes famous pie, lemon meringue, of
course I said I like crust the best so I got the biggest piece of pie,
that story works every time!! Then just a few miles down same road to
Lora Masche Forquin Mountain garden. Lora's garden surrounds her
beautiful home in beds bordered by rock, the veiw from her home is
breathtaking, we were looking north for many many miles to the valley
below. Her bloom was just past peak, even though she is just a mile or
so past Stones garden. Can't begin to name iris names we veiwed
Saturday, they were all spectacular. We made our purchase lists and are
checking them twice (always seem to buy something we already have).
