Yes.
Purple staining at the base of the foliage--PBF--may manifest or vary in
intensity based on several factors. An iris which has the potential to
exhibit PBF may not do so in all locations, or in all years, or to the same
extent everywhere. PBF may also be present early in the season and disappear
later. It may be present in only the smallest degree as a lilac tint to the
new increase buds as they form on the rhizome. Or it may extend as a deep
stain high up the fan.
Thus, for the purposes of identification of unknowns, the visible presence of
PBF on the specimen is more significant that the absence of PBF. An
individual iris not showing PBF may simply not be exhibiting it at the moment
you are examining it, but it might manifest when grown elsewhere, or at a
different time of year. However, an iris showing PBF is showing a
discriminator which allows the student immediately to place it into a
category which eliminates many other possible IDs.
