Local history and a newspaper report from The Avalanche, 1865 has it that
the name "Owyhee" was furnished by a couple of Sandwich Island employees of
the Hudson Bay Co and this was the English attempt at Hawaii, the native
title to the Sandwich Islands group.
Owyhee County is a large county in Southwestern Idaho bordered by Oregon and
Nevada. I don't know if I can convey the pronunciation right but I'll try
(since I don't know how to make all those symbols with the keyboard). Three
syllables; a long O, Y, Hee, the accent on the middle Y (wye?).
We have a small ranch in Owyhee desert and it is the love of our life. We
are lucky enough to be on a creek and have year round water and are
surrounded by sandstone cliffs and indescribable beauty.

Melba, ID where I'll spend the rest of the day dreaming of sitting in the
shade at the Oreana ranch. (BTW Oreana comes from the name for an unbranded
horse)
