Ditto - those USDA zones only include lowest temperatures.  They say
nothing about VARIANCE in temperatures & nothing about rainfall.  My
zone 7 gets well over 50 inches of rain/year and I suspect that summers
here are a bit cooler (and soupier, if that's possible) because of the
cloud cover & rain.  Tho highs get close to as bad as Texas, they
probably don't stay as high for as long.  Parts of Texas look like parts
of Tennessee near here where we have shallow, nutrient poor, sandy soils
- scrub oaks, pines, and grass.  Results in somewhat similar temperature
and water stresses, even tho climate is different.
