Re: CULT: '99 Iridaceae Yard Awards -

From: "Mark, Maureen" <MARKM@tc.gc.ca>

Donald,

I agree with Walter, an award is due to you. This sets a new standard for
bloom reports. I'd like to modify the Bronx Cheer award though. It need
not be an expensive iris. I got JAZZ FESTIVAL as a door prize and it
bloomed a lovely neglecta -- slim chances of getting it identified.

I fully agree about GOOD SHOW -- I tried it twice as I was assured that it
was the only orange that grows well for my area -- NOT.

I'd like to suggest a few other awards.

THE POSTMAN -- for the iris that braves the elements and only looks somewhat
weathered. Conventioneers and Okies should be able to come up with a few
names for this one. I'll have to go back to my pictures to check but there
were a few that were obviously hailed on and blown about with the only signs
of damage being nickel-sized holes in the bloom.

In contrast is DOWN FOR THE COUNT for the irises that topple over and can't
bounce back after a short period of strong winds. Sandy and I argue about
this one but I will not vote for an iris that can't stand up to a few hours
of wind. This award can also be granted for those that fall over without a
wind.
