Here in Kamloops, BC where the summer temps get to 115+ F we find that
Irises do very well in the summer. But we are a dry desert climate - I
think that makes it easier on plants than if we were a humid area with
hot temperatures. Winters here can be cool too - we've had temps down to
-25F some years, and occasionally I swear its been colder!!
Kamloops is a veritable feast for an Iris lover's eyes. For some reason
there are large plantings of Irises in many many gardens and you can
drive down any street and get a sore neck creening to see the next
gorgeous clump. Amongst those large groups of Irises I've seen many in
the shady side of a house, with trees shading them as well and blooming
profusely and happily.
We're off to the Islands next week and hoping to find some garden
treasures to bring home with us. Meanwhile I'm going back outside to
enjoy our own Iris beds, most of which are in full sun almost all day.
And I'm going to take some photos of our Japenese Iris clump which is
blooming right now.
btw, for those of you who can get a look at the current issue of BC's
Gardens West magazine you will find a satisfying array of Iris photos of
many species, some not usually covered in magazines, to enjoy. (SI, JI,
etc.)

Sharron
