Soak the seeds for three or four days in plain tap water, changing the water
daily. Fill a well washed four inch plastic pot with vermiculite, or seed
starting medium, or a fine textured potting soil such as Peters. Water the
soil thoroughly, keeping the surface nice and smooth, and let drain. With
some handy instrument--I keep a chopstick near--make shallow depressions on
the surface of the medium, about one-eighth of an inch deep. Remove the seeds
from the water, rinse, and put one seed in each depression in the soil. Do
not cover with soil, but press them in lightly. Cover the whole pot with
plastic wrap and hold in place with a rubber band. Place pot in a bright
sunny place, but not in direct sun. Water from beneath, being careful to
drain thoroughly. Lift a corner of the plastic for a minute or so each day
starting about the third day or so. Seed that molds at its navel is probably
dead, so fish it out with a pair of tweezers. Expect to see some germination
action in about a month if the seed is viable. When germination starts,
gradually remove the plastic. Pot the seedlings up when they are about an
inch tall if grown in vermiculite. If grown in soil they can stay in the
original pot a bit longer.
