Re: OT: name - reply
From: "Title, CDR Lynn A." <titlel@spawar.navy.mil>
I'd suggested "Ruffles and Flourishes" for two reasons - first, because the
profusion of dark-edged frills reminded me of the flounces on a
old-fashioned ballgown, and second, because that's the name of the little
tune played when an Admiral arrives at a formal Navy event - the maritime
equivalent of "Hail to the Chief". The "Ruffles" part stays the same, but
the number of "Flourishes" increases with the rank of the admiral --
obviously this iris represents the Chief of Naval (Space) Operations! And
blue-and-white are traditional Navy colors, too.
Not that I have a bias or anything...
Lynn

Hi Glenna,
As soon as George and Margaret I will tell him you said hi. Thanks for the
name, I kind of liked Q in the star trek movie. I think there is an agent
in the James Bond series named Q also, can't remember. If it hasn't been
used yet it is a good name! We will vote next week and if John will let me
I will announce the winner on iris talk. Thanks again.
Sincerely
Mike Sutton

Hey Mike,
Glenna in Colorado, here. Say hello to your dad. Re: the new plic --. I
always thought that if I ever started hybridizing, I wanted an iris names
"Q". He was a rascal of a character from the Star Trek series, The Next
Generation. At any rate, I know abbreviations and initials are not
permissible, but my thinking was "Que" pronounced "Cue". With the year
2000, and the introduction of a very special SA, maybe you can do something
with that. I wish you well.
My tall bearded are just beginning to bloom here -- I am so glad the
convention was last year. Given the crazy weather this season,
conventioneers would have had nothing to see!
Cheers -- Glenna

Hello Talkers,
I have a favor to ask. We are having a terrible time naming an iris for
next year, was wondering if any of you can help. It probably will be the
cover iris on the 2000 catalog. If you can email me with suggested names I
would appreciate it immensely. For some reason the name for this iris is
eluding us all. I have an updated picture of it on our web site at:
http://www.suttoniris.com/Flounced_plicata.htm
<http://www.suttoniris.com/Flounced_plicata.htm>
Of course if we use a name some one sends us we will send you a free one of
the iris. By the way I am extremely excited about this flower, it has great
branching for us and usually has a minimum of 11 buds, the flower itself is
rounded and has touching falls. It is a first for us to have a plicata SA
with flounces and they remain consistent to the last flower for us. Thanks
for humoring me.
Sincerely
Mike
