In fairness to the authors of the 1939 checklist, remember that they were
not covering 10 years, but the entire known history of cultivars and
species iris known in America. Without some sort of codification I
seriously doubt this work could have been scaled to publishable length.
Anner's comments about perceptions of color are well taken, but when I
think of expanding descriptions, I'm thinking more along the line of things
HIPS asks one when seeking an identity: foliage description, spathes,
things other than the notoriously unreliable flower color descriptions. Of
course pedigrees can help in this, and as one grows in knowledge the
pedigree should infer the answers to some of these questions.
In pure self-defense of the hybridizers, I would love to see the 2-3
paragraph biographical descriptions restored, so they can present a factual
account rather than being subjected to psychological interpretation on the
basis of the names they select for their cultivars. I fear I have
unwittingly tagged Dave Niswonger forever as a gourmand by indulging in
(and perhaps inventing) that game!
