Yesterday, our club sponsored our annual tour of our club garden, tour
three private yards, and return to club garden for a reception--this was
the 12th annual, so we have all been doing it for a while, and sorta know
what to do-- we rent buses, modern ones, do not charge for the tour, and
many of the persons attending are elderly, so we always make sure that on
each bus there is a medical person, who is trained especially in CPR.
Yesterday, just after the last bus had emptied, and many were still making
their way to the food tables, one lady came to me and said--"I think this
lady is having a seizure"--so I went over to her, and thought--"this is not
a seizure--might be sunstroke--or heart attact"--so started doing the
appropriate measures to take care of her--while sending someone into the
nearest building to call 911-- looking for a 'medical condition bracelet',
looking in her purse for a 'medical card' which would list any medical
condition--the closest hospital was about a half mile away, so the
ambulance and crew did not take long to get there--but by the time they did
get there, she was 'flat-line'--and no longer responding-
The took over, put her in the ambulance and away they went--all to the
consternation of about 150 people there-- and said they would take care of
notifying her family--
The reason I am telling you all this is--when your club sponsors an
event--especially a tour--rather than a show in a mall--there had better be
someone there who is medically trained--especially CPR--because this can
happen anytime, anywhere--and if someone needs immediate medical
help--someone had better be there who knows what to do!
Needles to say--it sorta put the damper on the reception--and was not the
kind of incident I would like to do again--for a long time!!!
(As it turned out, the lady had a long history of heart problems--heart
surgery, and had been having dizzy spells for several weeks now, but none
this serious)
Something for all of you to think about--and be aware that it might happen
anytime, anywhere--so discuss it with your club--the next time they are
discussing plans for an event--especially a tour--where you might not be
too near to medical facilities--
Carryl zone 3/4 in western Montana--where there are fewer than usual
bees, and few seed pods setting on this year
