<< This one sounds like ROSE' (Gaulter, '79), certainly much more so than the
other two. To my eye, ROSE' is just a bit more lavender toned than the
typical color of the wine for which it is named. The haft veining is not as
prominent as the trademark "thumbprint" that appears on many Gaulter
introductions. Otherwise, it does not have many distinguishing
charcteristics (no pbf, not particularly tall or short, or extremely
plain(tailored) or heavily ruffled/laced). >>
For what it might be worth I have a 1989 Cooley's catalog with a picture
before me and it has a description of Rose. This description says:
ROSE (Gaulter '79) EM, 28"
'Like a glass of Vin Rose, clear, bright, "old rose" coloring with 6-8 buds
on every stalk. Flaring falls, fluted closed standards, and a rosy-coral
beard."
The photo, which is a head shot taken from straight on with the "horizon"
between standards and falls level, appears truer to life colorwise than many
in catalogs. It shows what I would call a medium pink with a definite
lavender cast, reminiscent of the tones in LORILEE but more delicate,
lighter, and a bit pinker. Not as muddy as we here in Williamsburg country
call "old rose". The beard is indeed warmer in color and seems to be white
hairs tipped with coral but is not an assertive beard from this angle. Some
faint haft markings which appear to be a darker form of the pink-violet of
the flower, and an area surrounding the beard that is lighter almost to the
point of being white. The petals appear to be crisp, but translucent. Styles
etc. same color as petals. Rather nice form, I think.
To me the salient in the catalog description above is the registered height,
which indicates that it may run on the short side.
