When we first started discussing seed pods, a new person asked for more
information. I hope the subsequent discussion provided some answers.
If not, there are:
Several iris websites with detailed discussions of hybridizing, seed
pods, planting seeds etc
More information than anybody in their right mind (which pretty much
excludes all us listers, right?) would ever want to know in the archives
(search hybridizing, novice, seeds, beginner & various combinations of
those words). Probably most of the instructions for beginners is in the
older archives?
Books books books - Bill Shear's book and for the truly obsessed, The
World of Iris (whatever happened to the revision?).
The basic idea is to grab some pollen off one flower and daub it on
another flower, wait ~ 2months, collect seeds, plant them, & see what
happens.
[thanks Rosalie, for the thoughts on bee pods - I wouldn't even consider
them except there are often few opportunities here to make crosses (poor
bloom due to the late freezes), my obsession with tough tough plants,
and my overwhelming curiousity about stuff like ... how many seeds do
bee pods have, do they all germinate the same, are they really usually
outcrosses here or are they often selfs, will they give me tougher
children than the parents, and of course, could there maybe be something
really special amongst the weeds?

a few small, distorted pods have endured on intentional wide crosses -
keeping my fingers crossed for HONORABILE X CELEBRATION SONG and [(I.
pallida x MULBERRY ROSE) x ZING ME]. Pods are too small and probably
empty.
