I have already (sometime last week) told Earnie that it was ok to come
back on the list. In fact he did not take himself off, I bounced him as
soon as I heard about the worm. Now, lest you all start jumping down my
throat for overreacting, I did it because I did not understand what was
going on and wanted to protect the list from further invasion.
At any rate I was wrong on two counts.
First, Earnie was an innocent victim in this case (except for not having
up-to-date virus detection software), and for clicking on that dratted attachment.
Secondly: I momentarily forgot that I had set iris-talk to no
attachments, so it didn't really matter. The Virus was automatically
stripped off the message sent to iris-talk. That is not the case for
iris-photos however. That list is set up specifically for attachments
and I had to ask our archivist (at Mallorn.com) to go in the archives
and delete the message. The Onelist archives never contain attachments
so they are not a potential re-infection source.
At any rate, when I had this all figured out, I emailed Earnie explained
what had happened and invited him to return to iris-talk. To my
knowledge he has not returned, so tonight when I get home I will
re-subscribe him myself!
