I am attempting to find an iris. Hopefully, someone on the list may
have encountered this or know of someone growing it. (I know -- look
in Richmond for RICHMONDTOWN!) I have hopes for its continued
existence in Ken and Catherine's old stomping ground... It was never
listed in the mid 90s vintage historics database and I have not
encountered it in current catalogs. It never received wide
distribution.
From the 1959 Check List:
RICHMONDTOWN (K. Smith, R. 1955). Sdlg. 53-57. TB, 36" LM, W4. S.
white; F. royal purple. Helen Collingwood x Mardi Gras. Tell 1958.
From Tell's Iris Gardens:
RICHMONDTOWN (Kenneth D. Smith, Staten Island, N.Y.) Midseason-late.
36 inches. (Helen Collingwood x Mardi Gras.) Quite the finest purple
and white amoena I have seen. The standards are pure white and the
falls are rich Royal Purple entirely free of any haft markings.
RICHMONDTOWN has one fault-there is a lack of branching and the
flowers are high above the foliage. But the individual blooms are
lovely and unexcelled in their color class. Should be a magnificent
breeder. Because of its lack of good branching it is introduced at a
modest price. Net..........................$15.00
Any help greatly appreciated!
