Hi, Talk-ers!
In a message to the list earlier today pertaining to Pilkington's
impressive clump of Purissima, Anner mentioned an item I posted in
December, 1997 listing the cultivars that had grown tallest for me. None
reached the altitude of the one in the photo, (unless P's gardener was a
real midget), but for the sake of anyone who might be interested I am
quoting extracts from that message, along with an update.

And this was before the '98 bloom season, which broke all previous records
for irises blooming on stilts here. Some of the taller ones from that year
were STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN (45"), CRANBERRY DELIGHT (46"), PIRATE'S QUEST
(47"), SONG OF NORWAY (48"), TURANDOT (48"), GNU'S FLASH (49"), CONJURATION
(52"), and the uncontested champ, TRIPLE WHAMMY at 59".
I also wrote in '97:

> that stalks of CONQUISTADOR (Mohr, 1923) reached a height of 5 feet (in
California).
Interestingly, CONQ is the pollen parent of PURISSIMA. I was not growing
this iris in 1997, but I have since acquired it (from Superstition Gardens,
whose 2000 catalog arrived here, as well as elsewhere, today and who are
offering it for $3 this year). CONQUISTADOR has not yet bloomed for me, but
it is growing well with ample increase, and I expect to see it in bloom
this year. It will be interesting to see how high it will go.
