My 'blush' loropetalum bush is in full bloom and is quite the
traffic stopper with its reddish pink streamer-type petals. Looking it
up in THE NEW GARDEN ENCYCLOPEDIA (1940), a coveted
heirloom passed down to me by my grandmother, I find only
'chinese', a white is listed, and is said to be quite tender and can
be grown outdoors only in the warmest parts of the country.
Turning next to the intenet, I find a description and a picture of my
loropetalum. Reading on into the internet article, I find that it is
also called 'Razzleberri'! So, the shrub Kathy Poore mentioned in
an earlier post is perhaps more commonly known as loropetalum.
I stumbled across loropetalum about five years ago when I was
picking up new shrubs at the Oktibbeha County Co-op to be
planted at my present location. I was attracted to the bloom and
knew nothing of the plant, but have grown to love it as it has grown
and prospered here. It also has a flush of bloom in the fall but not
as heavy as the spring. It is planted on the north side of the house
and may be hardier than expected.
So, loropetalum and razzleberri are the same. Whatever you
choose to call it, it will razzle-dazzle you with its coloful blooms.
