Donald,

I think the answer lies in something you alluded to in a subsequent message
- there is a certain value to having a record of whether it was the iris
that has decided to leave you or if it was you who decide to part with the
iris. At least, I have kept track of the reasons for the departure of
irises from my garden for some time.

Among the ones that recur are
	Died (Translation: it died);
	Unthrifty (Trans: it looked like it was going to die, and I couldn't wait
any longer);
	Sickly (Trans: it was a "Typhoid Mary" providing a reservoir of infection
to which it did not succumb, but that was devastating everything around
it);
	Lost (Trans: I divided and replanted it, but when it bloomed, it was
something else);
	Unattractive (Trans: it certainly isn't what I expected from its
picture/description);
	Undistinguished (Trans: it looks just like a dozen other blue irises I am
growing);
	Outmoded (Trans: I've ordered twice as many new irises as I have room for,
so something has to go, and you're it).

With a written record, and not just memory to rely on, after several
seasons have passed by and absence makes the heart grow fonder and I wonder
why I was ever persuaded to part with dear old cultivar X, I can test that
longing against the reason for letting it go when I did.
