I found this particularly interesting:
At the back of the iris section of National Iris Gardens 1938 catalog they
have a section of rebloomers
"The New Fall Blooming Iris
This new type of iris which not only bloom in the early spring but flower a
second time in late summer or autumn is a new development in the
horticultural world. We are proud to be able to offer the largest
assortment of this unique type in the entire country. These plants grow and
increase so fast that they make a year's growth in five or six months and so
are ready to bloom again in the fall, after flowering in the early spring.
To encourage this second blooming, it is advisable to plant in rich non-acid
soil, in full sunlight, in as protected a location as possible, and water
frequently during the summer months as well as keeping the ground stirred so
that the plants will not fall into a dormant stage, but will continue to
grow and develop increase buds. Once the fall bloomers are established in
your garden, they will surprise you continually in late summer and fall by
producing beautiful blossoms. Some of these varieties are as beautiful as
any which bloom in the early spring, and are well worth a place in the
garden regardless of their twice-blooming characteristic. Some of the
varieties offered were originated in Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois, so one
can see that the fall blooming habit is not confined to the warmer states
thought this type blooms best in sections having no severe freezes until
late autumn."
It goes on to list 33 "Fall Blooming Iris". I find the rich non-acid soil
interesting. We have non-acid soil and experience some of the heaviest
re-bloom in the country. ELEANOR ROOSEVELT is listed and won a gold medal
in 1933 as the best fall blooming iris. It also states that it is a
multiple rebloomer. Wealth and wisdom from the past!
Mike
Don't you just love the (what we would consider) huge run-on sentences?
