The 1959 Checklist description of CORSAGE is "Bicolor, S. one yellow, two
white (sometimes reversed); F. white ground, splashed bright yellow."
I have never seen this iris "in the flesh", but from the descriptions I
have read the color pattern seems to be more closely related to that of
JOSEPH'S COAT ( Katkamier) rather than to the modern Broken Color irises
bred by Ensminger, Kasperek, et al. My assumption is that these are
genetically distinct (or are they?).
The pedigree given for CORSAGE in the '59 Checklist is "((Katharine Larmon
x Ola Kala) x sister) X ((Katharine Larmon x Ola Kala) x sister)", so
obviously it is intensely inbred, which is probably responsible for
bringing out the unusual color pattern. However, the modern Broken Color
irises are based on plicata breeding, and I don't see any plicata
background in this pedigree.
I believe this is the first time CORSAGE has been listed in the
Superstition catalog. It has been listed previously by Bluebird Haven Iris
Garden.
