Jean Morris, AIS Youth Chairman, sends the following announcement:
The Clarke Cosgrove Memorial Award for Youth Achievement winners for 2000
are
as follows:
2nd Runner-Up - Marc Loberg, Region 14
1st Runner-Up - Monica Combrink, Region 22
Winner - Stephanie Rust, Region 18
Marc Loberg's iris activities include growing, hybridizing and showing
irises. He breeds Netherland Dwarf rabbits for his 4-H project and studies
their color genetics. This ties in with his iris hybridizing goals as he
works toward strong "flashy" colors.
Monica Combrink has also been active in 4-H with irises being her focus.
She
has been 4-H Ambassador, State 4-H winner in horticulture and 1999 deligate
to National. She has donated over 1200 rhizomes at 4-H camps, workshops
and
fairs. Monica is an excellent writer and won the AIS Youth Essay Contest
in
1995. She shoulders adult responsibilities in her local club and is
described as hard working, cheerful and generous.
Stephanie Rust is well known on the Internet as she seeks advice and irises
for her breeding program. One goal involves broken color reblomers. Her
primary goal is to produce a reblooming MTB with aril/arilbred
characteristics. She knows it will be a long-range project, but she has
studied the genetic possibilities, assembled the breeding stock (including
several species) and is already lining out hundreds of seedlings. She
promotes AIS, is a tireless worker for her club, writes interesting
articles
for iris publications and has earned the hours to become an Apprentice
Judge.
Stephanie is described as considerate, helpful, creative and a
well-rounded
irisarian.
