That would explain the lack of seeds in the manure. In Australia horses are
commonly fed whole oats, and oat sheaves. Also lucerne hay (your alfalfa)
and pasture hay. It is also common enough to get wheat seeds growing from
the manure, if it is miked with wheates straw.
Wheat and oats are wuite easy to pull out and make good much or compost.
I noticed the local grain store had lucerne pellets for the garden. These
were quite expensive, but I might try a bag. How heavily do I need to apply
them?
If it is only a hand full or two per clump, then it might not cost too much.
Cheers, Jan Clark, in Australia, where it is cool and overcast, and there is
work to be done in the garden away from this %^$# computer!
