Greetings.
Has anyone tried any Zephyranthes, otherwise known as Rain Lilies, Fairy
Lilies of Zephyr Lilies around the perimeter of their bearded iris beds? I'm
inclined to do so. I have a fine little clump of the white one at the edge of
the so-called perennial border and I enjoyed it a great deal last season.
There is a pink one that is very fine, too, and a yellow which I've never
seen. One understands they are only hardy from USDA Zone 7 south, some
sources say 8, but the bulbs are dirt cheap from local garden centers or
McClure and Zimmerman and one could go to town with them for small change.
They bloom like little crocuses after rain showers in the late summer and
fall when things tend to look woebegone in my yard and they have the same
sort of fresh appeal as the Japanese anemones, which, of course, they don't
resemble otherwise.
Anyone using these or any other small fall blooming bulbs---crocus,
sternbergias, colchicums, whatever-- to add snap to edges of the bearded iris
planting later in the season?
