CULT: reliable oranges

From: Nancy Pocklington <npocklington@accunet.net>

I'll comment on three orange TBs that have been mentioned by others:
Malaguena (Ghio'85). I grew Malaguena for years, giving it to
friends and auctions and showing it every year. (Rare to have a Ghio
grow so well here.) Its color seems extra dependent upon soil richness.
I gave some to a friend, and we exhibited side by side.
His, grown in much poorer soil, was such a different color that the judges
called it "misnamed." (Take a lesson from that, judges; don't be so
quick to disqualify entries!) For me it was much deeper in color, in
good black IL dirt, no fancy additions. I finally let it go to make
space for newer things, but it performed well here.

Orange Slices (Niswonger '87). This was bought at Dave's suggestion
when I asked specifically for a hardy orange. It is doing well in a
bed where I'll be having 2nd year bloom this year after a major re-do
in '98. Looking good.

Rusty Magnificence (Niswonger '95). Last year was weak first-year bloom,
but I liked it and it's doing well in that same 2nd-year bed. The color,
however, I wouldn't call really "orange"; it comes closer to the darker
type like Rustler. I love it; I just don't call it orange.
