Re: Cult: Bloom Stalks
From: Gullo <tgf@frontiernet.net>
Hi Bill,
I've had rebloom one season despite temperatures dropping to 20 degrees F.. My plants routinely see temps. in the 20's and 30's during the rebloom season. I tend to wait until I see a fairly long stretch of low to mid 20's forecast for a number of consecutive days (3-4), before I give up hope for any additional fall bloom.
The smaller classes of iris seem to handle the lower temps. better. Often a tall stalk will have some or all of it's buds killed at relatively warmer temperatures than will an IB or SDB.
Certainly if significant snow is forecast I get the stalks cut off, because I can't take the risk that the snow cover will not melt to allow me to get the stalks removed before winter. If the stalks are not removed the plants will be at greater risk of rotting during the winter.

A guessing game here because some weather people try to be over dramatic on the conditions, and then again about the time I don't heed the advice, they are right. Now, when a freeze hits, do you trim off all buds or have you a temperture where you know you have lost the blossom. Here again I feel there is probly a difference between small and large. any thoughts, I'll thank you now as I know the weeds are calling and when the sun shines I'll be in the garden Bill
