At the top of a hip of an unopened rose bud and enclosing the bud are the
lobes of the calyx, otherwise known as sepals. These are roughly triangular
and are attached at the base. They vary in form from one type of rose to
another. In some roses the sepals have small leafy structures attached along
the outside edges. In order that the sepals may enclose the bud all the
sepals cannot have these structures on all sides. There are five sepals, of
which two have the structures on both sides, the adjacent two have none, and
the last has them only on one side.
The puzzle is said to have been posed first by the monks of the Middle Ages.
Another version of it runs thus:
"We are five brothers at the same time borne,
Two of us have beards, by two no beards are worn,
While one lest he should give his brothers pain,
Has one side bearded and the other plain."

Comments as requested:
1) The structure of the sepals is one of ways in which the genetic heritage
of old roses is manifested and thus they play a role in the identification of
unknown old roses.
2) Edward A. Bunyard was one of the Bunyards of George Bunyard and Co., Ltd.
of Kent, UK, established 1796. They specialized in, among other things,
fruit. His brother Captain G. Norman Bunyard was an iris hybridizer, and
luminary in the RHS and the BIS. He introduced BETELGEUSE and GAINSBOROUGH
and others and was awarded the Foster Memorial Plaque in 1928.
