I've thought about this one as well. Often I think color and form are
both at work in what constitutes a flower. Generally the darker the
flower the more I favor a tailored form, but the reverse doesn't hold
true necessarily for the pastels. I just find ruffles distracting on a
dark bloom. But on some form is a definite impact. AT LAST, a
quarterbred aril was such a one for me last year. I loved for the
simple graceful form it exhibits; color, pattern and texture were
secondary to that form. I'm looking forward to see if the form has
the same impact again this year. On others, like ASPECTS OF
LOVE, the ruffles just worked to create the whole thing. But on
LUMIERE D'AUTOMNE, I wanted to iron them out even tho I loved
the color. JADE QUEEN was another in which form played a major
role in the whole look. Not large blooms, but with a perky (sorry,
just can't think of a better term) curl and wave to the blooms which
suited the odd coloring very much. All too often I think it is easier
to identify those with more disagreeable form to my eye - falls too
horizontal making them look like they got stuck and couldn't really
open; conical short standards. I do think there is a wide variety
of acceptable forms, depending on the overall impression of the
bloom on theplant as a whole. I'm not a judge, so am not sure how
form would be measured from that standpoint.
