AIS: Show Schedules Including Historic Irises

From: hipsource@aol.com

Greetings,

Last August, after receiving the last of several inquiries about how to
handle historic irises on an AIS Show Schedule, I made inquiries and received
the following note from Roy Epperson about the current acceptable form. I
include this information here for the convenience of anyone who may find it
useful. Any questions about this should be directed to Roy at the e-address
he provides at the bottom of the note.

Note-------------

"When you include a section on Historic Irises in the show schedule and
submit the schedule for evaluation and approval, the following format is
what I want to see:

DIVISION I: HORTICULTURE

    Section A : Tall Bearded

Group E (e.g.): Historic Irises (introduced prior to 1970)

    Section B : Other Bearded

Group E (e.g.) : Historic Irises (introduced prior to 1970)

    Section C : Beardless

Group E (e.g.) : Historic Irises (introduced prior to 1970)

Note that the HIPS definition of an historic iris is "....introduced
more than 30 years ago."

Most schedules do not include Historic Irises sections for beardless.
It appears that the majority of historic irises that appear at shows are
TBs.

Remember that the exhibitor has the choice of entering the TB (e.g.) in
the Historic or in the regular TB Section BUT NOT BOTH IN THE SAME SHOW.
The schedule rules need to state this. This is the same regulation that
we have with respect to Youth and Adult Divisions. A youth may enter
one or the other BUT NOT BOTH in the same show.

If your show shedule provides for Best of Section rosettes, then you may
want to have a separate Section as follows:
    DIVISION I : HORTICULTURE
Section C (e.g.) : Historic Irises (introduced prior to 1970)
         Group 1: Tall Bearded
         Group 2: Other Bearded
         Group 3: Beardless

This makes it possible for exhibitors to have the opportunity to compete
for more ribbons/rosettes AND also highlights the Historic Iris.

Be certain that you do not use the term "Antique Iris". I will only
approve the term "Historic".

Joyce, please contact me at any time as you are working on the schedule.
It will need to be submitted to me at least 2 months in advance of the
scheduled date of the show. I commend you for wanting to include
historic irises in your show. Most people do not realize that a large
number of the irises grown in the average iris garden are by definition
"historic."

I am in the process of writing a Comprehensive Model Show Schedule which
will be ready for distribution in January 2000.

Please contact me at any time. epperson@acme.highpoint.edu
