Cult: The survivors

From: Chris Darlington <chris.darlington@sympatico.ca>

Hi folks,

Thought I'd give a brief report on the state of my irises which have
spent the last four months encapsulated in ice. Too my surprise , out
of 50 new additions to the new beds I made last summer , there have been
no casualties. All of the California imports were planted here in
middle July and this appears to be the secret in the wet and icy North.
The four that I did lose were locally bought and had been out of the
ground for sometime. Half of them I planted in the ground at the end of
August , the other half were potted indoors in cut off two liter coke
bottles and are extremely happy now on the windowsill. The others are
green masses of mush.

My advice for people in this climate is to buy the dry rhizomes when
they come out on display with the tulips and other bulbs in the fall and
pot them up indoors in December to be planted out in the garden at the
end of April. I actually prefer doing it this way because by the time
fall comes around , the rhizome was already become a very nice clump and
is heave resistant. Sometimes they bloom the first summer outdoors
which is an added bonus.

After hearing horror stories about only 25% survival rates for new
additions to the garden here in the North, I can finally breathe a sigh
of relief and hope for a nice display of blooms.
