I use old window screens scavenged from friends over the years from
upgrades to better windows. Best ones are open expanses of screen with
aluminum frames. The also break up energy from heavy down pouring rain
so things don't wash around as much. My pots, flats or tubs aren't full
to the top with soil, so there is a bit of growing room beneath the
screen - I've not had problems with varmints messing with the pots once
seedlings are well up.
Except of course, when the dog buried a dead skunk in one of my bigger
seed flats. His excuse was that he thought I had already moved all the
seedlings out of the flat (he didn't see the 5 that were too small to
move.....).
