I can tell you what is not a sport.
Ageing mother reported a sport on one of her prized pelergoniums recently.
Quite amazing really, because the main plant had pink flowers, and the
'sport' was a bright red. very contrasting. She pointed out that it was very
much like the plant nearby, and could it possibly have got 'crossed' in
someway.
I quickly determined that it had indeed got 'crossed' and that the 'sported'
section was actually growing from the nearby plant, with a long branch
extending into the pink flowered bush!

I don't think sporting is a very uncommon occurrence. My neighbor reported
only yesterday, a pink double sport on a yellow rose bush with single
flowers. I have had a few sports over the years, with the most notable being
a beautiful citrus green bottle brush flowering on a red flowered
callistemon. Unfortunately I was to inexperienced a gardener at the time to
take cuttings and grow this sport on, but it was definitely growing from a
branch of the same plant.

Iris growers who grow thousands of varieties are quite likely to see a sport
from time to time.

Cheers, Jan Clark. in Australia, where daylight savings has just ended, and
I discovered to late, that I was entitled to an extra hours sleep in this
morning!
