I too have noted rain, dryness, etc, and it is the dry stigmatic lip that
most often causes lack of fertilisation. This can be because of intense
heat, or most usually, wind. Hence the use of saliva.
I didn't have any real problems with rain, except that if it was heavy, I
was less likely to go out in it to make the crosses, and the flowers would
have drooped by the next day.
