IDA RED (B. Clark, R. 1978) TB, 36", EM.
Deep red-wine; gold-bronze beard. Adam x
Fire Ruby. Haltom Road 1979. H.M. '81
This sentimental favorite bloomed for me today, and each year
when it blooms, I am reminded of Bruce and Ida Clark.
Bruce Clark had one goal in hybridizing irises - to create a
beautiful red iris and name it in honor of his devoted wife, Ida. And,
he wanted to used the name of the song Bob Wills and his Texas
Playboys had made so popular in the 1940's.
He worked with several combinations of red over the years, but
all who saw his red seedlings agreed that the Adam x Fire Ruby
child was the best.
Peggy Williams registered and introduced IDA RED for Bruce
and sent it off to conventions for guesting. Since the bloom season
for the 1980 AIS convention in Tulsa was late and hardly any TB's
were in bloom, IR, an early bloomer, was in full bloom for the
convention. I R's dazzling display was remembered by the judges
a year later when they voted it an H.M.
Bruce and Ida were silent workhorses in the Fort Worth Iris
Society. They were in attendance at every function and did more
than their share. They drove all over Fort Worth and picked up
older members who could no longer drive themselves to iris
functions. They helped transport others' flowers to the shows,
enabling Mrs. Rena Allen to win Queen of the Show on MOON
RIVER, the only stalk Mrs. Allen entered that year.
Ida was famous for all the goodies she brought to iris feeds,
and her meatloaf was like no other. After many years, Ida revealed
her secret about that meatloaf. "Walter, you just fix meatloaf the
usual way, but instead of using any liquid in it, you just add a small
can of Wolf's Chili, not Hormel, only Wolf's!"
IDA RED is aging. Some might say she is too tailored and by
today's standards is missing a branch. But when you think of how
she came to be and whom she honors, you forget all of that
fussiness.
Every iris has a story, and IDA RED's is one of my favorite.
