The bearded iris season is underway here in central Virginia, with 'Dark
Vader', (MTB) open today. Tomorrow we should see first bloom on 'Black
Cherry Delight,' to be followed by 'Pele'. Almost 10 days ahead of last
year!
I had reported losses of 'High Stakes' and 'Devil's Lake' to botrytis, but
fortunately I did not uproot and discard the rhizomes. Both are producing
tiny little increases and with good growth might even make blooming size
rhizomes for next year.
I had a terrific time on Sunday at the C+P Iris Society meeting. Rather
than a talk, we had a wide-ranging discussion based on my slides. Great to
meet the Spoons, Bruce Weinstein and others, and touch base again with
Rosalie Figge.
We are having good rains, have made up our deficit for the month of March,
and now are less than 0.25" behind for the year. With more expected on
Thursday, we should catch up. I hope it continues and we don't desertify
like we did last year. The down side is that leaf spot has appeared and
the rain spreads it quickly. This evening I will give in and use some
Daconil on it.
In the greenhouse, great germination on seed from the crested hybrid 'Nova!'
When I say greenhouse, I mean the college's, which I have used for some 25
years. However, we have cleared a site for our new home greenhouse, it has
arrived in five big boxes, and we should have it up in a couple of weeks.
Hooray!
