I would add to the list of aphylla traits that Mike Lowe posted -
aphylla seems to give the ability/tendency to drop leaves and go dormant
during drought (my only observations are for hot, summer drought), more
so than the other species I've grown (variegata, pallida,
reichenbachii).
This comment is based on the aphylla clones that I've grown here and
some of the cultivars with aphylla in pedigrees.
Aphyllas also seem to be the source of densely branched, 'furry' surface
feeder roots. Maybe?
I'd be interested in hearing if others agree or disagree with these two
observations.

cold, but not a big roller coaster event - not supposed to get below the
upper 20s, so I'm not expecting much stress induced rot from this one...
