That's why Walter Moore's suggestion of breeding from California-bred-
and-selected Ghio introductions involving Romantic Evening and
related lines is a source of some hope. Some of these have quite
black falls. Breeding for selfs (selecting away from the bicolor
genetics involved) might be a fruitful avenue to explore for warm
climate blacks. The aphylla ancestry is so remote in these there is
a chance some dis-association between the problem characteristics and
the dark color has occurred.
The Blyth generations behind Joe Ghio's lines involved in Romantic
Evening also occured in a warm climate zone in Australia, not unlike
California in character.
