A local iris person swears by "pulling off all extra coverings on the
back of the iris" before planting to improve number of new plants. I
just assumed that it makes it easier for those "smallish" growths to
sprout.  If you "feel" the "elbow" part of an iris plant you will feel
many bumps, actually new plants wanting out!! is what I tell visitors to
our garden. Hey it is not raining today, most water gone from field but
still can't weed. Our seedlings (in pots) are starting to sprout, all is
well here in Modesto CAlifornia.
