Which species you are trying?  In Goldblatt's monograph, he divides Moraea into those that come from winter rain and summer rain areas.  The common (to horticulture) ones are from the winter rain area.
From the reading I felt that the species from the summer rain areas would more more amenable to culture here.  A second looks shows that his summer rain species are those from near and possible in the
Drankensberg Mtns.  It makes sense that they could be more hardy if they do their growing in the summer.
