I find it difficult to discuss my own progeny in that no matter what I
say it will sound immodest or as braggodocio. Abbey Road first bloomed
here in Oregon from a cross made originally in N.J. It increased well
and when Jim McWhirter saw it in 1992 he requested that he be allowed to
introduce it. I gave him about 50 - 60 plants and it came out in 1994.
It got its HM in '96 and AM in '98. I have never seen it when it didn't
look exactly like the R & I description. The photo in Schreiner's
catalog shows the standards as being perhaps a bit more yellow but that
may be just a function of the printing. I've checked my slide files and
of the 6 or so slides of AR all are lighter than the standard color in
Schreiner's.
It has always been an excellent grower and to quote Mike Lowe "plant it
and stand back or it will poke you in the eye." It may have a tendency
to sulk for one season but threaten it with a garden fork and give it a
stern talking to and it will perform as it should. Being absolutely
truthful (Scout's Honor) - I have had many excellent reports on AR's
performance and no really bad ones.
Perhaps the best description of AR that I have seen came from "The
Dominion" (newspaper) Wellington, N.Z. 13 Nov 1998. "It ranges through
iridescent silver to clotted cream. It's robust and hearty, but like
most beardeds needs shelter from tashing." The newspaper photo pretty
much matches what I have on my slides.
Perhaps our friends from OZ can define "tashing" for us northeners.
