        They must.    I mean, my mom gave me pieces of an iris that was 
coffee colored in her good New Jersey soil.    It was supposed to be a plummy 
red...and it was just almost burgundy in my sandy amended soil in SC.   I 
imagine that's why it's such a challenge to i.d. an iris positively if it's 
unknown and why you just have to grow them side by side to be relatively sure.
