Re:Cult:Arils in the North

I am not as far North as some, but am in zone3/4--high mountain desert--the
same as outer Mongolia-- and here we can grow Arils if they are at least
1/2 bearded--tall or medians--some of them do wonderfully in our club
garden--totally exposed to the weather--nothing to stop the wind--rarely
have good snow-cover--and many survive and bloom--
We have discovered-over the years--that it doesn't matter if the bloom looks
more Aril or more median or tall bearded--
One of our club members has 1/4 Arils growing--but she has then beside the
house and mulches heavily with straw every year-- Luella Danielson was up
here several years ago--and then sent us several Aril rhizomes-- with most
of them lasting a few years--then we had a normal winter--and never saw
them again--
Arils are truly beautiful and at times I wish I could grow more of them--but
the number of flowers per clump vs. the number of flowers for a TB clump-
the TB's will have 3 or 4 times the number of flowers--with a lot less
care--
We do have them at the club garden, mostly because we are trying to show the
variety of Iris flowers--if anyone is interested in which ones do well
here--send me a note off line and I will send you a list of them--Carryl in
western Montana--where we have had one night without frost and two days
above 50--since early October--had 2 days of spring and now we are back to
winter--
