<And the forecast is mid-twenties for the next two nights. The wind's
blowing, and the chill has a knife edge. Brrrr!>
And here I am in 7b or 8 and the urban forecast is for the low 20s or
upper teens tonight and tomorrow. Temp extremes west of the mountains.
Probably will hit 5 degrees lower here in the boonies. I hate to see
this, even tho I expect it every year. Late daffodils in full bloom, no
self-respecting iris showing signs of bloom yet.
So my iris culturing activity for the day was to put 2 100 x 6 ft Reemay
plant bed covers over 4 of 6 main iris rows and to bury the iris seed
flats under a layer of water filled cola bottles and two layers of
Reemay. Everything else is going to just have to tough it. I'm going
to make some photos of 'after' shots of the covered and uncovered rows
later in the season. Should show some dramatic differences.
No seeds showing signs of germination yet, but most of my crosses are of
mid to late bloomers, so I don't really expect them to be up this
early. All the covers and bottles are to protect them in case they are
thinking about germinating - temperatures in the teens is too cold even
for a tough seedling if it's starting to grow.
