Hi Barry Silver and Everyone,
If you are traveling between Santa Barbara and San Jose, I'm guessing you
will have to drive right past Scott's Iris Garden, Iris Hill Farm, and the
Atascadero branch of Forte's Iris Gardens (me). We are all right off Highway
101 about two hours north of Santa Barbara. Scott's and Iris Hill are both
good sized gardens with lots of gorgeous moderns. Mine is rather smaller, but
I specialize in historics. In my garden, lots of stuff is spiking right now,
and PAPRIKA FONO'S, GERMANICA, ALBICANS, CRIMSON KING, MAKING EYES, GRAPE
ORBIT, and quite a few other SDBs are blooming right now. Scott's has a lot
of SDBs.
Oh, and there's a place in Arroyo Grande, a little south of here, also off
the 101--I think it's called Ponderosa. I haven't been there, but I hear it's
beautiful. And their bloom might be more advanced since they are at a lower
elevation.
Scott's, Iris Hill and Forte's advertise in the Bulletin, but let me know if
you need directions or other information for them. I think Scott's might know
more about the place in Arroyo Grande as well.
And if you can make the detour out to the Central Valley, there are wonderful
gardens out there (including the Los Banos branch of Forte's Iris Gardens
which has mostly moderns). Atascadero is about two hours away from Sutton's
in Porterville and about two and a half from our garden in Los Banos and
Woodland in Modesto. Superstition is farther, but definitely worth the drive.
